CEO the Cavalier King Charles SpanielCavalier King Charles Spaniel Ch. Jewelcroft's CEO

Ch. Jewelcroft's CEO. A classic Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in every way. Sporting, fearless, intelligent. Exhibiting outstanding health. Structurally perfect with smooth top line, solid bone, wrapped up in a luxuriant, yet mat resistant, coat.

Like all great Cavaliers CEO has a sweet pensive expression to match his loving temperament.

CEO comes from one of Ontario's top Cavalier breeders, Jewelcroft, which adheres to a strict health testing regimen. Anyone searching for top notch Cavalier puppies ought to contact them.

Weigh all the facts on the table and decide for yourself. We believe you will agree, all things considered, CEO ranks at the top of the pack.

We hope you enjoy the information and articles on this site. Visit our photo page for high quality stock photo images & videos of CEO and his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel friends.

Double bonus: CEO's pups come from health tested lines with low inbreeding coefficient

As with people, highly inbred dogs tend to have lower fertility, higher incidence of disease and diminished intelligence. So selecting a puppy with a low inbreeding coefficient makes a great deal of sense.

However, selecting a dog based on a low inbreeding coefficient alone does not--in and of itself--ensure health. The myth that hybrids (i.e. mutts) are healthier proves the fallacy. How? Inbred or not, two sick dogs, related or unrelated, will still tend to produce sick offspring.

For instance, crossing an inferior Poodle, with an inferior Retriever invites inferior puppies even though theoretically outcrossed. Complicating matters, many congenital issues are recessive, therefore invisible, unless one follows lines for a few generations. The fact remains, outcrossed puppies (mutts included) are as only as healthy as the parents. Ironically, breeders blinded by the "hybrid vigour" myth tend to skip health testing and therefore produce the most suspect dogs.

We advocate the use of rigorously health tested breeding stock as the first step while aiming for the lowest inbreeding coefficient possible.

The CEO x Carly pups come from an excellent health background with an inbreeding coefficient of only 3.76807%, based on a 10 generation pedigree, well below the FCI recommendation.

Cavalier King Charles spaniel puppies

Seeking a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy? We proudly Announce CEO's first litter of 2013 with Ch. Jewelcroft's Dalecarlia, also known as "Carly", a lovely black and tan female from excellent health tested lines. Carly descends

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Champion Jewelcroft's Dalecarlia

Ch. Jewelcroft's Dalecarlia

from black + tan x black + tan parents and therefore does not have a speck of white to mar her rich appearance. She has a rich glossy mat resistant coat, thick ear fringes and a very feminine head.

In classic Cavalier fashion Carly has a very outgoing and loving temperament, a perfect match for CEO.

Carly has a clear heart (as do both her parents each of whom are over 5 years old) and a pristine spinal cord MRI scan. For complete documentation and other details contact us.

Early January 2013 litter

CEO's and Carly's puppies are due January 2nd, 2013. At this point, we have no idea what colours Carly will throw as this will be her maiden litter and we have not yet determined what colour gene she carries; dominant black, or

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Jewelcroft's CEO snuggling with his mother Jem at age 6 weeks

particolour. Stay tuned. In the meantime we have posted some of CEO's puppy photos for your viewing enjoyment.

Outcross breeding

CEO and Carly were selected to mate for two primary reasons. The first reason was overall health, not just individual health, but a solid health history right down each line (CEO's father, for instance, remains healthy and heart clear).

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Jewelcroft's CEO spars with his brother Cooper at age 6 weeks while his sister Tiffany plays referee from the sidelines

CEO spars with his brother Cooper at age 6 weeks
while his sister Tiffany plays referee from the sidelines

The second reason, was to improve genetic diversity. CEO and Carly are highly unrelated to one another, so much so that the breeding represents a practical outcross.

We fully agree with line breeding proponents who assert negative traits can be eliminated over time through careful selection. But in this case we consider the CEO and Carly combination to be a line breeding along health lines, and an outcross in all other respects. In other words, we contend this mix offers the best of both worlds.

Follow this page for more details and photos

At this point Carly waits like any expectant mother must. But soon we will have more news. Visit this page in January for photos and other details about the CEO x Carly pups.

Update: January 2nd 2013

4 healthy puppies were born; 1 Black + Tan girl, and 3 Ruby boys. So Carly certainly does not carry the dominant black gene but, likely, the whole colour gene.

Puppies were whelped naturally and Carly has thus far provided excellent care for her pups. Congratulations to Carly and CEO. Many thanks to Bonnie Sands (Breeder) of Jewelcroft Cavaliers, Mary Beth Squirrel of Embee Cavaliers and their whelper helpers, Heather and Joe. Look for pictures coming soon.

Update: January 14th 2013

The puppies are doing very well. They've been very busy nursing in the whelping box and doubled in weight before the first week. See the puppy photos below.

Stay tuned. The next photos will be shot during the "puppy puzzle", an exercise designed to estimate the confirmation or "show" prospects of the pups.

Update: March 2nd 2013

The "puppy puzzle" party went ahead on schedule but our photographer could not make it because of the snowy conditions. However, many dignitaries attended including representatives from other Cavalier kennels and a professional show handler. All were very impressed with the CEO x Carly litter.

Update: March 12th 2013

The pups are now spoken for and soon they will be trotting off to new homes all over Canada. Two pups (Mr. Red Collar & Mr. Black Collar) have decided on big city life and will be moving to Toronto (on the same street, no less). As a matter of fact one of the boys will be moving in with his dad. The little guy who we named "Pooky" has packed his bags for Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Little Miss Yellow Collar will be learning French and moving to the Laurentides in Quebec.

But before they leave we decided to snap a couple more pictures just for posterity. Hope you like them.

Ace earned his CGN title at the London Canine Association Dog Show.

Update: December 31st, 2013

Tahki now has 7 points towards her Championship title. Both Ace and Andrew have finished 'Novice' level obedience classes this year and have signed up for 'Open' level classes in January 2014. We expect to see some obedience and conformation titles in the coming months from these promising pups.

Photo retrospective...

Here are some photos of the CEO/Carly pups over the past year with an emphasis on Ace and Andrew since they live with (or live next door to) their father, CEO. We would love to post some pictures of Tahki and Wesley too, so if you happen to have some photos you would like to share, send them in.

Photos are in chronological order from the time the pups were placed in their new homes. See photo dates under the descriptive caption.

Update: January 2nd, 2015

Happy 2nd birthday to the Carly/CEO pups. What a year 2014 was, especially for CEO's superstar daughter, Tahki. The boys did enjoy some notable achievements too, with Ace also making strides in the show, Rally-O and obedience ring.

Tahki was nominated for the "Puppy of the year 2013" with a final run-off competition at the 2014 Cavalier King Charles Club of Canada (CKCSCC) National Specialty Show held in Chilliwack, BC. She took Puppy of the Year for the Quebec region, and while at the National, she took the prize for best Black + Tan too. Way to go Tahki. Your father, CEO, is so proud of you.

For more photos and information about Tahki visit her personal web page here

Now, for the boys... Ace and Andrew. Wesley, who is out in the Maritimes is not that close, so we cannot stay in touch as easily. Wesley, if you are reading this, drop us a line and let us know what you are up to.

Over the course of the year, Ace and Andrew attended Swansea Dog Obedience School, which has a legendary reputation and has the most amazing instructors. The brothers studied Rally-O, brushed up on Novice, then went on to Open and finished Utility class all in one year.

Ace earned a Novice and Rally-O leg at the Grey Bruce Kennel and Obedience Club Trial, which wasn't bad since his hapless handler made an error causing him to forfeit a first place ribbon for a perfect score. Mea culpa.

On the other hand, Andrew's owner, who is a first time handler, seems reluctant to take the plunge and enter a trial. Hope she overcomes the jitters soon since Andrew is a top performer and will no doubt dazzle the dog world when he makes his debut.

Update: July 17th, 2015

Momentous news! Ace is now the father of four lovely daughters.

Ace was Married to a lovely Blenheim girl on May 18th, and on July 17th, his wife, Sadie, also known as "Mysticmoon Happily Embee After" gave birth to two Ruby and two Blenheim girls. They ranged from 8 to 10 ounces; very large, healthy and robust.

We hope to post photos soon, but in the meantime, visit Embee Cavaliers for pictures and details.

In other news...

In March of this year Ace had his spinal cord MRI'd to check for signs of syringomyelia. This was a routine check in accordance with breeding protocols. The scan came back perfectly clear. Plus, he had "nice ventricles" according to experts.

Update: September 12th, 2015

Ace earned two legs toward his C.D. title, at the Cavalier King Charles Club of Canada National Specialty Obedience Trials September 4th 2015, thus finishing his C.D. with an extra leg to spare. His scores were not in line with expectation, but, Ace still managed to pull off two high-in-trial wins.

In the meantime Tahki has not been sitting idle. She continues to challenge Ace in the brother/sister rivalry. Recently Tahki earned her Agility Intermediate titles and isn't about to stop there.

Brothers Andrew and Wesley now face a game of catch up. Come on guys, get with it.

On Saturday September 12th, Embee Cavaliers hosted a 'puppy puzzle' evaluation at which Ace and Sadie's pups were given the once-over by a panel of experts. Reviews all around were very positive.

Update: November 12th, 2015

News Flash! Tahki gave birth to two healthy puppies early this morning, a Ruby boy and Black + Tan girl. Tahki delivered her Ruby boy in the car on the way to the hospital, while the Black + Tan girl had to be coaxed out via C-section. Given the hubbub, things could have gone awry, but with contingency plans made in advance, everything went well, and the pups are doing great.

The handsome and highly accomplished father, named 'Seven' and also known as "Ch. Dawnaquinn Double O Seven, CGN, R.N., AGNs, AGIJs" will clarly be able to help Tahki school the pups in agility.

Meanwhile, CEO is now contemplating buying a bumper sticker for his car "happiness is being a grandparent" or, on second thought, maybe not. At any rate he is thrilled for Tahki and Seven.

Ace has been busy in the show ring and earned the final point for his conformation (i.e. show) Championship at the Elgin County Kennel Club Show, October 17th.

Update: January 2, 2016

Congrats to Ace, Andrew, Tahki, and Wesley on your 3rd birthday.

What a year 2015 was for CEO and Carly's children. Tahki and Ace both had litters and the pups are all doing great.

We just got a report from Ace's Ruby daughter BluBelle. She moved to a household in The Barbados and now lives with 3 Cavalier boys, a Tri, Blenheim and Black + Tan. And guess who the new boss is? We would love to hear how the other pups are doing so drop us a line!

Tahki and Ace both earned enough titles in 2015 to qualify for the CKCSCC Versatility Award, elevating them to elite status in the Cavalier world. The Versatility Award goes to dogs who have achieved at least three significant titles across the spectrum of obedience, conformation, agility, tracking or rally.

Ace now has one leg towards his C.D.X. He plans on wrapping up that title soon, then pursuing his Utility and Novice Agility titles this year. Tahki will continue with agility; she finds regular obdience "too slow" for her liking. Both are shooting for the ultra elite Versatility Excellent Award.

Andrew still attends school with his brother, diligently as ever, but no titles (yet).

Wesley checked in and sent us some photos. Hey Wesley, you're looking good!

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Jewelcroft's CEO: Should you spay or neuter your Cavalier puppy?

Should you spay or neuter your Cavalier puppy?

In some cases a puppy may, for some medical reason or another, require spaying/neutering. In other cases, the puppy may have a disqualifying confirmation fault, but otherwise have no health issues. In these cases spaying/neutering may make sense. But generally, spaying/neutering offers few benefits and many liabilities.

But first, the urban myths. Despite what some people say, neutering a dog will not reduce leg lifting, eliminate mounting behavior, or aggression (not an issue in Cavaliers anyway). In females, the bi annual heat cycle does not present anywhere near the fright or inconvenience people imagine and owners of intact bitches report they miss seeing heats altogether as the bitch discretely cleans up after herself. Veterinarians often cite cancer risk to justify spaying/neutering, but the odds your dog will die of ovarian or testicular cancer remain remote. Chances are greater your dog will be hit by a car. In reality, dog owners often base the decision to spay/ neuter on misinformation.

On the other hand spaying/neutering presents problems. For one, a growing puppy needs hormones generated by the sex organs to grow/develop properly. At the very least, owners ought to delay spaying/neutering until the puppy reaches full maturity. But even adult dogs can suffer side effects, including obesity, and the development of an unusually thick and unruly undercoat that typically makes grooming a chore. Some frustrated owners resort to shaving dogs to keep shedding under control. Other examples abound but we submit that dogs were meant to have their sex organs left intact and removing them generally causes more harm than good.

More intact dogs mean a larger gene pool. Not all pets are destined to become health cleared show dogs. But some do, and if not neutered can go on to sire litters themselves, adding more diversity to the gene pool. As a Cavalier owner keeping your dog intact, at least for awhile, can help improve the breed for all of us.

A final word: Responsible owners of sexually intact purebred Cavaliers can be generally trusted, so the argument that intact dogs will breed indiscriminately does not hold much water. Besides, most professional breeders only sell dogs under non-breeding contracts making unapproved progeny unregisterable.
